José Vicente Ferrer

José Ferrer was an actor, screenwriter, musician, singer, director and producer. He is the only Puerto Rican to win and Oscar for best actor in a leading role and one of the eight actors that has won a Tony and an Oscar for the same character, Cyrano de Bergerac, in theater and film respectively. He also received a Golden Globe for the same role. He was nominated for an Oscar another two times for his performances in Joan of Arc and in Moulin Rouge. He portrayed the character of Iago in the theatrical production of Othello on Broadway. It ran for 296 performances, the longest Shakespeare play ever produced on Broadway. After his retirement, keeping with his principles and commitments with the development of art, he only received as pay one dollar, yearly, for his works. He is recognized for his contribution in opening doors in Hollywood for Hispanics.
