José Campeche was the first Puerto Rican painter to assume an artist’s conscience. Son of a freed slave, Campeche painted the new Puerto Rican identity of the 18th Century. His religious work and paintings are extraordinary. He used his paintings to depict in great detail the reality of his time. He is considered as the most prominent portrait painter of all Hispanic America. His paintings are a testimony of Puerto Rico in the 18th century.
