Jaime Benítez Rexach
Vieques, P.R. 1908 – San Juan, P.R. 2001
Jaime Benítez Rexach dreamed and helped create a modern, prosper and educated Puerto Rico using the University of Puerto Rico as his platform. Using only education and books as tools, Jaime Benítez helped the country to get out from the poverty and brought it towards a path of hope and social change. He was chancellor of the biggest educational institution of Puerto Rico, member of the Constituent Convention of The Constitution of the Commonwealth and Resident Commisioner of Puerto Rico when, in the middle of the academic year, he decided to substitute English for Spanish in the courses that he taught. Against all opposition, he inaugurated in 1950 the School of Medicine, which provided Puerto Rico with lots of professionals to cover the health care needs.
