Inés María Mendoza Rivera

Inés María Mendoza focused her interests and worries throughout her life on: defending the Spanish language, the preservation of the Puerto Rican culture, the conservation of nature and universal and free education. For her, education should touch all aspects of public and private life, because a fair and productive society depends on free citizens; whose freedom is fully based on their knowledge, ideals and actions. She promoted the creation of the Division of Community Education in 1949, the Institute of Puerto Rican Culture in 1955 and the television station of the goverment of Puerto Rico in 1958, the arrival of the Maestro Pablo Casals to Puerto Rico in 1956, the establishment of the Casals Festival, the Puerto Rico Symphony Orchestra and the Music Conservatory of Puerto Rico, among other efforts.
