Francisco Oller was the first painter to study in depth what was Puerto Rican. He studied with the most important artists of modern painting in Europe. Throughout his life he utilized the proper techniques of Realism, Impressionism and Folklore painting. His most recognized work, “El Velorio” encompasses all three styles. Through his paintings he tried to educate the country and exalt Puerto Rican values. Today he is considered the most important Puerto Rican painter.
